SUMMARY:UrbanSparkle 2025
DESCRIPTION:UrbanSparkle is the annual exhibition of UrbanGlass’s Store and Gallery featuring jewelers specifically working in the medium of glass. The artists featured in the 2025 edition are Deirdre Maine\, Everett Hoffman\, Julia Turner\, and Nikki Couppee. \nDeirdre Maine has been celebrating the cast-offs of the wine industry since she moved to Nuits-Saint-Georges with her family in 2018. Influenced by her immediate environment\, she favors simple forms in her designs highlighting both the inherent beauty of glass and the specific past function of her raw material. \nEverett Hoffman is a cross-disciplinary artist and educator based in Austin\, TX. His current body of work examines contemporary forms of protection and iconographic communication\, illuminated through the use of lights\, sculptural forms\, and body adornment. \nJulia Turner‘s beautifully crafted jewelry pieces are strong\, subtle\, and a pleasure to wear. She combines organic forms with an architectural approach using a wide range of materials\, from silver and gold to wood\, steel\, and enamel. Each piece is made by hand in her San Francisco studio. \nNikki Couppee creates bold\, experimental jewelry using unconventional materials like plastics and enamels. Known for her signature “hologem” aesthetic\, her work transforms traditional jewelry into striking\, wearable art. By pushing the boundaries of materials and design\, Couppee continues to redefine contemporary jewelry with innovation and creativity. Her work has been featured in publications and museum exhibits worldwide.

SUMMARY:Brooklyn Navy Yard: Past\, Present & Future
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn Navy Yard: Past\, Present\, and Future is a permanent exhibition at Building 92 that tells the story of the Brooklyn Navy Yard from 1801\, when it was founded as one of the nation’s first federal shipyards\, through to the site’s use today as an active industrial and innovation hub that is home to hundreds of businesses. The exhibition is located across three floors inside the former residence of the Marine Commandant\, an adaptively reused building that was originally constructed in 1858. Inside the exhibition\, visitors will get an extensive history of the site through detailed wall text and a variety of artifacts and objects that span across centuries. \nThe exhibition is the first exhibition to tell the Yard’s story and was originally installed in 2011 with great community support from both organizations and neighborhood residents alike. Ultimately\, the exhibition aims to introduce contemporary audiences to the generations of people who worked\, transformed\, lived\, and shaped the Yard over time\, and who continue to build upon the storied history of the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

SUMMARY:Open Source 2025 Open Kitchen
DESCRIPTION:Each year the Open Kitchen brings together artists\, cooks\, friends\, and neighbors for a month of cooking\, eating\, sharing and celebrating! \nFor at least 7 nights in December\, given that we have volunteers\, we will provide a simple dinner to our community. You can be our Volunteer chef for one of the nights and be responsible for a “one-pot meal” (usually a soup or stew) that can feed approximately 15-20 people (cookware and utensils and a hotplate is at the gallery). All meals are served between 7:00-9:00pm. We welcome all kinds of unique dishes from any ethnic tradition! The cook of the night is also encouraged for incorporating an artistic element into the evening–it can be a one-night exhibit\, musical performance\, short play\, or decoration of the gallery! \nAttendees of the Open Kitchen are neighbors\, artists\, people who are down on their luck\, or some who are simply hungry. Sometimes the conversation flows easily\, sometimes not\, but the food is nearly always tasty (it’s New York\, after all–we have standards!) Join us for good food\, good art\, and good conversation–and bring your friends\, family\, and neighbors!\nSign up! \nIf you would like to be a guest\, check the calendar (soon) and stop by Open Source in December between 7:00pm and 9:00pm\, when food is served!

SUMMARY:For Fear of Reprisal: Murrow’s Boys‍
DESCRIPTION:For over 40 years\, Irondale has been making theatre that speaks up and speaks out in times of national crisis — and having a great time doing it. For Fear of Reprisal brings back three of our most daring pieces for a new moment of resistance. \nJoin us for three wild\, wacky\, and intimate staged readings that remind us what it means to question authority\, challenge power\, and keep laughing through it all. \n‍Tuesday\, November 18 at 7:30 PM‍\nPeter Panic: Flying Underground: A comic political fantasy featuring Abbie Hoffman\, Walt Disney\, and Peter Pan — a roller coaster of truth\, rebellion\, and imagination. \nTuesday\, December 2 at 7:30 PM\nMurrow’s Boys‍: The story of Edward R. Murrow and his fearless band of journalists who told the truth when it mattered most. \nTuesday\, December 16 at 7:30 PM‍\nDegenerate Art: At the “Banned Cabaret”  a very unusual company of artists tells the story of the  infamous 1933 Munich Art exhibit\, the 1990’s “Culture Wars” in America.

SUMMARY:Armando Guadalupe Cortés\, Dead Parrot Radio
DESCRIPTION:Armando Guadalupe Cortés presents Dead Parrot Radio\, a large-scale installation of sound and sculptures that reference various communication technologies\, investigating what it means to express and be understood—by one another and between species. Throughout his practice\, Cortés draws on anecdotes from familial narratives\, local folklore\, or direct experience to form each exhibition. Dead Parrot Radio is the first instance wherein each work carries its own story\, brought together through ideas around the desire for communication\, the threshold of migration that presents an inability to go back\, and what it means to have a native home that one does not know. These mediations are further explored through a relationship between humans and parrots\, chatty birds that can mimic the cadence and patterns of human speech. \nThroughout the gallery\, a series of large sculptures mimic communication infrastructures: cellular\, wifi\, and radio towers\, and a satellite dish\, primarily constructed from steel frames\, the artist’s first significant project working in this medium. The installation centers on a stage that offers itself as a site for potential performance\, holding a mic and a record player that the artist inherited from his father. In addition to the stage\, many of the objects on display will be activated by the artist during two weekends of performances through the exhibition’s run. \nThe sound component emanates from bullhorn speakers\, in an indirect call-and-response between recordings of the artist’s family and their own pet parrots. This disparate display of miscommunication is felt as yearning rather than as clear articulation. It is a soft shout across boundaries\, literal and metaphorical\, longing for home and family\, using technology as a proxy for closeness. Parrot and macaw feathers appear throughout the gallery including—as orbs\, and sewn together to create a call flag. In equal blocks of yellow and blue\, the flag translates to the letter “K\,” which\, when flown alone\, signifies the message: “I wish to communicate with you.” The layers of potential communication are further complicated when considering parrots’ own visual spectrum\, which is wider than that of humans. Due to the feathers’ natural striations\, the parrots may not even recognize the blocks as solid colors\, nullifying the potential signal. Throughout the exhibition Cortés harnesses the gesture of the call\, at times lonely and misunderstood\, but carried forth by the strength of longing.

SUMMARY:Chang Yuchen\, For those who share mornings and evenings
DESCRIPTION:Smack Mellon presents an experimental project within Chang Yuchen’s practice\, considering the effect of communication technologies as a way to explore distance and loss–of time\, memory\, and shared experiences. Presented in a two channel video installation with sound over five hours in length\, this intimate work comprises selections from a database of screenshots captured by Chang’s late husband\, Yuan Yi\, as well as a dream archive transcribed by the artist a few years later. \nFilling a wall in the back of the gallery\, the first video takes shape through thousands of low-resolution screenshots of the artist\, mediated through a video chat window from the perspective of Yuan Yi\, her late husband who passed away suddenly over a decade ago. Yuan obsessively documented their virtual intimacy in this way throughout the long-distance relationship the two shared. When seen on a single timeline\, the rapidity and consistency of the images coalesce into a soft filmic narrative\, capturing the longing across the temporal/geographic distances and the cursory nature of the communication medium. Vibrating with the poor image quality of screen grabs\, now over a decade old\, the subtle shifts in lighting and movement distribute broadly across exaggerated pixels. Sounds of the artist’s breath create the soundtrack\, which is echoed in still moments when the artist sleeps or listens\, where the only visible movement between frames is the subtle rise and fall of her chest. Yuan himself appears in blips—as both spectre and voyeur—where he occasionally grabbed an image of himself instead. \nDisplayed on a monitor across the gallery\, a text Chang recorded and later translated from ten dreams overlays slowed-down video footage also captured by Yuan Yi\, itself dreamlike in its abstraction of light and dark. The two videos\, which can’t be seen at the same time\, do not explain one another but serve as counter balances\, both extrapolations of distance and love as mediated by screens. The voyeur sits opposite to untranslatable interiority. Quiet\, spare\, and saturated with time in the shape of shared moments\, Chang’s installation elucidates the bare potential of storage media\, while gesturing to the mundane in-capturability of togetherness.

SUMMARY:FREE THE LAND!
DESCRIPTION:FREE THE LAND! is a cultural survey that contemplates African diasporic indigeneity and the literal and symbolic impact of history on our contemporary environmental landscape – from the embodied relationship with Mother Earth\, to colonialism\, climate change\, and climate injustice. \n\n\n\n\nOn view through December 14 at MoCADA Culture Lab II at the L10 Arts and Cultural Center in Fort Greene\, Brooklyn\, this multidisciplinary exhibition is curated by MoCADA’s Executive Director + Chief Curator Amy Andrieux and features works by 20 artists\, including the celebrated Chakaia Booker\, Tabita Rezaire\, Lizania Cruz\, Deborah Jack\, Illiana Emilia Garcia\, and Yussef Agbo-Ola among rising notables including Hana Ward\, Jaime Lauriano\, and Mario Marcilau to name a few. \n“Here is the magnificent climate; here is the fruitful earth under the beauty of the southern sun; and here\, if anywhere on earth\, is the need of the thinker\, the worker and the dreamer. This is the firing line not simply for the emancipation of the American Negro but for the emancipation of the African Negro and the Negroes of the West Indies; for the emancipation of the colored races; and for the emancipation of the white slaves of modern capitalistic monopoly.” – W.E.B. Du Bois\, “Behold the Land” speech; October 20\, 1946. \nInspired by the writings of African-American sociologist\, writer\, and historian W.E.B. Dubois for the show’s curatorial point of view\, and those of Black Brazilian feminist scholar Beatriz Nascimento for its spatial design\, FREE THE LAND! is rooted in an intersectional\, multigenerational\, and international conversation about geographies of liberation. Grounded by Nascimento’s theory of the quilombo – free territories dedicated to African cultural practices\, or as she puts it\, “African villages where the Black population took refuge to pine after their motherland…”\, where “armed resistance to the slavocratic regime” was enacted and exalted – the show works to detangle the vines of apartheid\, exploitation\, and imperialism from the African diaspora’s traditional and concentrated connection to land as stewards\, laborers\, farmers\, foragers\, root workers\, and healers. To reconcile this shared history before any pruning can begin\, Free The Land! poses an existential question about how one survives this critical moment\, where land sovereignty lays at the root of multiple political conflicts (Palestine\, Haiti\, Democratic Republic of Congo\, Sudan\, Ukraine\, etc): Will you build or will you destroy? \nThe show’s name comes from the Black Liberation Movement’s long-held call to action for land reparations and justice\, which is inextricably connected to LandBack!\, the Indigenous-led intercommunal movement calling for “a return to communal land ownership of traditional and unceded Indigenous lands and rejects colonial concepts of real estate and private land ownership. Return of land is not only economic\, but also implies the return of relationships and self-governance.” Let the weeds of exploitative labor be pulled out while the restorative waters of ancestral memory nourish our legacy… By reclaiming our relationship with nature\, we address climate injustice and confront colonialism at the root: Free the land\, free the people.

SUMMARY:Nine Patch Quilt Holiday Ornament: A Virtual Class with Karen Stevens
DESCRIPTION:Oh\, the humble nine patch — a perfect use for all those Scraptacular remnants! One of the simplest quilt blocks\, the nine patch was often the first taught to young girls due to its ease and accessibility for hand stitching. These quilts gained popularity during the Civil War\, when fabric was scarce and only small remnants were available\, often repurposed from discarded clothing or uniforms. \nIn this workshop\, participants will hand stitch their own nine patch quilt block\, experimenting with composition and color. A ribbon loop and fragrant filling (lavender or balsam fir) will then be added to create a festive ornament. Alternatively\, the finished block can be used as a decorative patch for a favorite pair of jeans or a tote. These blocks can also be collected and combined into a larger project — such as a pillow\, wall hanging\, or quilt — offering endless creative possibilities. \nThis class is open to all skill levels. Basic hand stitching techniques will be covered\, including back stitch\, combo stitch\, and running stitch. \nNo previous experience is necessary. This class is great for beginners!

SUMMARY:For All Your Life
DESCRIPTION:For All Your Life\nCreated by Leslie Cuyjet\n\n\n\n\nFor All Your Life is a performance\, film\, and social experiment that investigates the value of Black life and death\, drawing on the life insurance industry for method and metaphor. In the film\, Brooklyn choreographer and performer Leslie Cuyjet delivers a seminar that reveals how the insurance business is linked to the historical slave trade\, how people grapple with the inevitability of death\, and how monetary value is affixed to human life. In performance\, Cuyjet embodies the passions and conflicts underlying such transactions. \nDeemed “a potent choreographic force” by The New York Times\, Cuyjet is a 2025 Guggenheim Fellow and received a 2019 New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Award. Her solo Blur earned a 2022 award for Outstanding Choreographer/Creator\, and With Marion (2023) reflected on the legacy of her great-aunt\, Marion Cuyjet\, a pioneer in Black dance education. Learning that major insurers once sold policies on enslaved people became the seed for For All Your Life\, complicating Cuyjet’s own understanding of value\, mortality\, and legacy. Extending beyond the stage\, the project includes a companion website (forallyourlife.com)\, a digital marketplace that invites audiences to confront how Black life and death have been—and continue to be—quantified.

SUMMARY:“let freedom bring” — a collaborative exhibition between powerhouse arts & AANYAA
DESCRIPTION:Artistic freedom must be championed at all costs in our ever-shifting sociopolitical reality. The notion of freedom is fundamental to the American condition\, and has always been a heavily loaded concept vis-à-vis freedom of speech\, freedom of religion and other founding principals.  On the eve of this nation’s 250th birthday\, this exhibition examines works that exemplify\, question or critique freedom in all of its many forms.  \nJoin us for a special collaborative exhibition presented by Powerhouse Arts and AANYAA\, curated by PHA President Eric Shiner. \nPanel Discussion: December 11\, 7pm \nThe Alumni Association of the New York Academy of Art (AANYAA) is a volunteer-led organization that works to support and enrich the alumni community of the New York Academy of Art. The AANYAA promotes the work\, news\, and events of Academy alumni\, coordinates community activities\, and provides a forum in which to exchange ideas.
